Everyone, it seems, loves to camp by car these days. After the Years of Covid, people want the freedom to walk without the discomfort of hotels, social-distance and risks of infection.
Fortunately, it has never been easier or more comfortable to set a camp in and around your car. A couple of new products perfectly illustrate this ease of escape.
Moon Air Mattress 2.0
Customized designed to fit perfectly into specific vehicles, the latest generation of Luno Air Mattresses are ideal for solo travelers looking for an easy-to-established camp. Our central tester, Donna, is a 62-year-old retiree who is exploring the west as her husband completes her last years or work.
Luno’s air mattress fits perfectly into the cargo space of his Jeep Grand Cherokee, bending snugly around the wheel-well and filling the holes around the doors and hatch. Donna reported that with just half of the inflated bed, she had plenty of space to store loaded cargo boxes with another camp and hiking equipment, so it was easy to leave her bed setting for night use while still had easy access to the equipment she needed for several adventures.
The Luno Air Mattress quickly inflates using the included 12 volt pump, and proved to be durable for several weeks of use exploring the western United States. The face fabric of 300 drenants protects the air mattress while providing a soft and free slip surface for your sleeping bag or blankets.
The Luno Air Mattress 2.0 is available in custom fit settings for the latest SUVs and Pickups. Check the website to ensure your vehicle is covered. $329. Buy now.
Zenbivy Light Bed 2.0 – 10oF
The Zenbivy system replaces a traditional sleeping bag with a full field bed. Instead of a narrow and conical bag, Zenbivy bed provides campers with insulated mattress and integrated sealed mattress. The mattress is engraved to match the rectangular mattress, and instead of a simple bag design, it extends from the foot box section in a large blanket design. That provides incredible warmth, while giving the campers the comfort of their normal bed and comforter.
For use during fresh shoulder seasons, we opt to test the Zenbivy Light 10o system. With an 800-liter HyperDry Down, the bed is waterproof and warm, keeping the minimum weight. The Large size, equipped in a 20-inch pad for 72 inches, weighs in 2 pounds, 15 ounces that make it usable as a backpack bed, but incredible comfort is suitable for the use of car camping as well. The 10oF rating was staged – we slept loudly during the snowy nights in the high country of the Washington desert coulee. The ventilation capacity through the open nature of the design of the mattress, and the tapestry at the base of the standing box make the bed versatile enough to be a functional summer-weight bed as well.
The Zenbivy Light bed replaces the traditional bedroom and bag with a complete bed system that is light, warm and incredibly comfortable. $458 (regular), $478 (long). Buy now.
